There has recently been a resurgence of the traditional craft of lettering in gold leaf and other precious metals, with renewed appreciation of its beauty, durability and sheer visual impact.

There are two main types of gilding. Reverse glass gilding is usually applied to the reverse of windows. Using incredibly fine and fragile sheets of loose 23ct gold leaf with a water size achieves an incredible high shine, mirrored effect, sometimes combined with other techniques to add visual interest to a design.

It is ideal for shopfronts or house names- traditionally on over door fanlights - and it’s a testament to the durability of this technique that there are numerous surviving examples of Victorian gilded house names.

Surface gilding can be applied (almost!) anywhere that letters are painted, and adds a stunning impact to any special sign. It is ideal for adding accents to a painted sign, and excels in making a sign stand out in any light conditions. For this technique, the 23ct gold leaf is applied to an oil based size.

Other metals can be used, such as silver, copper, platinum or imitation gold, but pure gold is by far the most weather resistant, so is recommended for all outside jobs.
